I Manchin Column From the Governor's Desk: A Weekly Column by Governor Joe Manchin World's Strongest Men Help Showcase The Best Of The Mountain State Perhaps there is nothing that signi- ties the state of West Virginia more than our beauty and strength. We are proud of our eye-catching scenery and our people have never shied away from doing the heavy lifting. Fortunately, we had two native West Virginians. former World's Strongest Man. Phil Pfister and first-year com- petitor Brian Siders. who were eager to put their superior physical strength to the test and compete with other athletes from around the globe, right here in our backyard. The 2008 Met-Rx World's Stron- gest Man contest allowed our state's characteristics of scenic beauty and physical strength to go on full display for enthusiastic crowds in person, and now. will be shown on television in the International spotlight. I am so proud of the way the city of Charleston hosted the Strong Man competition this past September• We had great crowds, great weather and a lot of fun. I think if you ask the competition officials and organizers, they will confirm that this venue was as suc- cessful as any, and the crowds were some of the best ever. I also believe that this international television coverage will continue to provide positive, worldwide exposure for our capital city and our state. And I know for a fact that it will be on television for months and months to come! I want to thank everyone for step: ping up and making this event pos- sible in such a short amount of time. By all accounts, it was a success, This was a true collaborative effort that allowed an event of this magni- tude to operate successfully. There are many people and groups who de- serve recognition: Charleston Mayor Danny Jones and staff. Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau, University of Charleston, West Vir- ginia Coal Association. Chesapeake Energy, Yeager Airport officials, Executive Air, and the WV Air Na- tional Guard, Coonskin Park, IMG Sports Media, ESPN, all event spon- sors, all of the state agencies involved. our citizens for your support, and many others. I think everyone will be pleased with the quality of the production and the way the Mountain State is por- trayed on the upcoming television airings. My hope is that we are able to make a positive impression for the millions of vmwers and living rooms this pro- gram reaches. It was a rare opportu- nity and we took advantage of it, And I am really excited to see the results. Full Scholarship Program for High School Students Promotes Study of Strategic Languages Abroad "" The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) pro- gram is offering 550 full scholarships to U.S. high school students to study abroad and .learn languages that most students do not have opportunmes to learn, but are rapidly becoming criti- cal to know. "Recent years have demonstrated how important it is that Americans learn languages of countries that will be prominent in the 21st century," noted Lisa Choate. Vice President of the American Councils for Interna- tional Education. "Students in this scholarship program will be well- positioned for careers in a wide range of fields." Programs immerse participants in language acquisition courses throughout their stay in the host coun- try. Students live with a host family, gaining invaluable formal and infor- mal language practice and sparking a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures. Students will attend school and interact with international students in person and through online technologies• Students wishing to apply for full scholarships must: be U.S. citizens, be 15-18 years of age and enrolled in high school at the time of application, and have at least a 2.5 GPA. Students may participate in the program during high school or during the gap years between high school and college. Beginning language students are invited to par- ucipate, although all levels of instruc- uon are available. Fluency is not re- quired, but students with oral and writ- ten expertence in the program lan- guages are especially valued for their experience. Students returning from their NSLI-Y international experience will be able to apply their knowledge in university and professional oppor- tunities.
