That a small state like West Virginia is large enough to support two such dissimilar politicians as Hechler and Byrd is one of Appalachia's ongoing mysteries. The deepest puzzle is Hechler. Unlike most mountain politicians, he is an apostate who has never taken a vow of obedience to the coal and energy companies. His own district in the southern border of the state contains more coal than any area in the country. Coal may be king, but for Hechler the powers behind the throne can be wily and dangerous, with a record that he occasionally calls "diabolical."
