The Bible's Most Mysterious Passage? The beautiful soprano aria from' Handel's Messiah begins with the words lknow that my redeemer liveth (Job 19:25, King James translation). This is a mysterious passage for sev- eral reasons, one of which is that the text has been poorly preserved. We have no originals of any Bible text,. and it would be certainly helpful here if one were available. But the myste- rious nature of the passage is also in ItS apparent refer= ence to life after death, and even a reference to Christ. Handel certainly makes that connection. The original Hebrew translated as "redeemer" in' ' the King James re- ally means, in con- text, "vindicator." :::: Is the vindicator *':~, :: God, or some other person? It is probably God. Job believes that God will vindicate him, defend him, prove his correct- ness, but when and how is not al- luded to. The King James version includes a verse 26: And though after my skin worms destroy this body. yet in my flesh I shall see God. The first hal f o f that verse is not in better translations because of serious problems in our extant copies. Furthermore, a belief in an afterli!'e is very much out of place historically. We find no allu- sions in the Bible to an afterlife until i H Jill i _ Daniel and Maccabees, some 500 years after Job was written. It can't be Chi'ist that Job is refer- ring to. He had no possible knowl- edge of that future accomplishment in God's plan of salvation for hu- mankind. Christians have traditionally given a spiritual sense to Old Testament passages, a meaning the original au- thors didn't have in mind when they wrote. In that sense one might see the "vindicator" refer- ence in the way Handel used it: re- ferring to the resur- rected Christ. But that is going well beyond what the original was say- ing. The afterlife that Job, and people of his time envi- sioned, was Sheol. This was an abode ofthc dead, but nothing was known about it. It was equivalent to "non- life," and is often used synony- mously with "death." Better to not be there, because who can praise ( od from it? It is trust in God that shines through Job, not a solution to questions about retribution and reward that we know of because of the much later revela- tign in Christ. Job then shines as a model for trust even in darkness. And that is something that God asks of us all, sometimes or even fre- quently in life. iH i i i [ I Tel: 304-462-8481 953 Mineral Rd.
