By Claudia Rock • Vadis ° This and That Hello, everyone! I'm sorry I didn't write a column last week. After re- ceiving a few phone calls from some of you ("Were you sick? Did some- thing happen to Cliff?"), I decided to be honest. Last week, I just "turtled in," as my friend calls it. You know, you stay home, watch TV or read a good book, talk on the phone...that was about it. Oh, and I tried to stay warm. Our gas kept going off poor Cliff would get out there and pull the plunger, and it would pop back in. For two days, we heated with the old wood stove. What is with this fi-igid weather? This winter is a weird one, if you ask me. Two days ago, it was 59 degrees; now, it's snowing outside. I wish I was as young in body as I am in my mind. I love snow, and I'd be out there sled-riding and having hot co- coa afterward. I mentioned to Cliff about us going and getting a couple of sleds...he looked at me like I'd lost my mind and said, "No, Honey-- you'd slip and break a hip." So much for sled-riding, I guess. For those of you who are young in body AND mind, take a ride down the hill for me, will you? Well, how are you all doing on your New Year's reservations? I only made a couple this year. I figured it would be easier to keep a few, instead of the six or seven ! usually make. One reservation I'm doing very well with: from January of 2008 to Janu- ary of 2009, I've lost 20 pounds. YEAH! So, I've decided I would like to lose twenty more pounds this year. My problem is, I love bread. Any kind of bread. With butter. Cookies and candy, not so much...but every once in awhile, I'll get this major craving. So, I've put myself on The Dolly Parton diet--eat whatever you want, but just eat a bite or two. So far, so good. I'm really trying to stay away from eating anything that has eyes. I don't hunt, yet I will go to a grocery store and buy meat. For me, that's being a bit of a hypocrite. I can get my protein from different food sources, so bye- bye meat. I'm not trying to lay a guilt trip on anyone' so please don't be offended. I've also decided I need patience. Patience is a virtue, right? So, I've taken up quilting. Not a full-blown quilt yet, but I'm quilting a wall hang- ing for the new house. You know, the one we've been working on for ten years now. mothcr taught me how to embroider, so I thought, well, quilting should be a snap. Wrong. Two majorly different skills here. First of all, I knew nothing about quilting. God bless the lady in Wal-Mart who took me under her wing. After taking up about 45 min- utes of her time, I left Wal-Mart with the proper supplies: quilting thread, batting, backing, new sissors (just for sewing-- I told Cliff to keep his mitts off my sissors!), embroidery thread and yarn (these I'm going to incorpo- rate into my wall hanging), and two beautiful panels I bought off rolls of quilting fabric. I never knew you could buy quilting panels--how cool is that! Well, this hobby-to-learn-patience is really occuping a great deal of my time. I love it! Every time my thread knots up, I think have PATIENCE. A cat carries my ball of yarn under the couch, I think PATIENCE. When I'm quilting away and my little kitty (whom I have named Trouble, lbr obvious reasons) climbs up onto my lap and wants to play hide-and-seek with my thread, I think PATIENCE. Then, I put my quilting up, give Trouble a big hug, and play with him for awhile. After all, love is important too, right? Right. By the way, thanks for the phone calls and emails on my columns re- garding cervical cancer and A Dog's Prayer. I know of one lady who went in for a checkup after her sister read her the column, and for that, I'm happy. I hope others will take care and get a checkup, too. Yes, it COULD happen to you. Bye for now. If you would like to reach me with an idea for a column, email me at Special_Kiss @ webtv, net or call 269-5187.
