Pat's Chat Pat Ridpath, Burnsville 472-5102 or 888-294-5401 An Ice Cream Cone for a Nickel?! I attended the funeral of Kenneth Romel. husband of Sheila. whom I know from Sharpe Hospital in Weston. Mary Ellen Davidson, Eliza- beth Ferri~ll and I went together. We saw other Sharpe employees, and it must have been all of the Emergency Squad members! I loved the way they honored the service by sending two members to st~ind at atte ntion on each side of the coffin (so appropri- ately done in wood and camouflage). A few minutes later, another two mem- bers would march up and.replace those standing there. I was very impressed by their support of Sheila. who is one of them, and a very important one of them, I am sure. After the funeral, we went to the Olde Mill Diner. just past Jackson Mill. If you have never eaten there, I recommend it. They serve breakfast all day, I believe. I had a very deli- cious vegetarian omelet. My com- panions asked for extras or different food than listed, and this was done without question. They advertise homestyle cooking, and their placemat states, "Friendship Served Here." I believe it. If we can talk him out of Chinese food, John and I will take Bob Bailey there the next time we come to Weston. We attended the first birthday party for Robert Michael Furr, son of Bobby and Lisa Furr, who live in Lewis County, down Buckhannon Moun- tain Road. Little Bobby is a favorite of John's at church, where we have been privileged to watch him grow. start to walk (only he mostly runs) and learn to love him. His brother. Ike Petty, goes to the Brushy Fork Chris- tian School and is very proud of his little brother. Biddie Love and War- ren and Jeri Hart are Little Bobby's grandparents. Many churchmembers attended, and we enjoyed watching him open his gifts. He squealed with glee when he opened books. The Town of Burnsville is sponsor- mg a Flea Market at the Community Building during the first weekend of March. If anyone wants to partici- pate. it will cost $5 per table. For more reformation, you will need to call the Mayor's Office at 304-853- 2605. I will get information to you as I get it. My brother, Sonny (Harry Wiant. Jr. ), was at a soctal function in Mary- land several years ago. Many people were milling around, so Sonny intro- duced himself and a friend, using only first names and indicating that both of them were fi'om West Virginia. A snooty lady looked down her nose and said. "Don't they have last names in West Virginia?" I love his an- swer: "No. we all have the same last names, so we just use first names." It shocked the lady and "put her in her place." My brother has written several vi- gnettes about Burnsville memories. I will try to include one with each Chat as long as he keeps them coming. Here is nulnber one: Years ago, my brother, Sonny, had a date with Betty Scarborough, a pretty minister's daughter who recently had moved to Burnsville. After attending church that evening where her father was preaching, Sonny planned to take Betty out for an ice cream cone (al- ways one to plan exotic evenings). That would cost all of a dime! Five cents each! Sonny had forgotten about the necessity of putting something in the offering plate, especially when sitting next to the minister' s daughter, so he put his only money, a quarter, in the plate and took out a dime. Later, he wondered if making change in the offering plate under those circum- stances was really very smart. Re- cently, while visiting with Betty and her husband, his dear friend, Bob Singleton, Sonny recounted that ex- perience. Betty said, "It really made an impression on me (I don't think she ever dated him again) !" I am having computer problems and could not send pictures I wanted to include. Maybe next time. Maranatha!
