Participants can visit www.skincancer.org to send a letter to their representatives before Friday, April 3. Although the foundation, along with the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, was successful in secur- ing $4 million for melanoma research last year, "historically, funding for melanoma research has been dispro- portionately low." according to Perry Robins, President, The Skin Cancer Foundation. "The Skin Cancer Foun- dation is proud to launch our new advocacy system to make it easier for the public's voice to be heard. To- gether, we can make a difference in the fight against skin cancer." The public can now wsit www.skincancer.org to send a per- sonalized letter to their district repre- sentative. Participants will be asked to submit their zip code, making it fast and easy, and ensuring that the letter is in the hands of the appropriate Congress person. All letters must be submitted by April 3~ for the request to be added to the Defense AppropI:ia- tions Bill. The foundation has a goal of secur- ing at least 5,000 letters by the April 3 deadline One person dies every hour from melanoma. And while the death rates for other common cancers such as breast, colon, and prostate cancer are declining, death rates for melanoma have increased nearly 30% over the past 25 years. About The Skin Cancer Founda- tion Now celebrating its 30th year, The Skin Cancer Foundation is commit- ted to educating the public and medi- cal professionals about sun safety. As leaders in the fight against skin can- cer. the Foundation is the only global organization solely devoted to the prevention, detection and treatment of the world's most common cancer. The mission of the Foundation is to decrease the incidence of skin cancer through public and professional edu- cation and research.
