14 The Glenville Democrat/Pathfinder April 29, 1976 Stats show two deer for every hunter The United States now has two deer for every deer hunter, yet each year only one out of every eight deer is taken by a hunter...Alaska hunters have a 106.8% success ratio while Rhode Island hunters have a 4.1/o success ratio...In West Virginia, deer average 127 lbs. Deer are heavier only in Minnesota and Kansas. This information was gleaned from a table of statistics in the March/April issue of DEER SPORTS- MAN magazine. The table is designed to help hunters plan their next season hunting trips. Texas and Alabama, for example, are the two most under- hunted states for whitetails, according to the article "Nationwide Deer Hunting At a Glance," Most of the statistical information was compiled by Prof. Sidney W. Wilcox of ATizona State University. and includes a state-by-state breakdown of number of deer, number of hunters, harvest figures, success ratio and average size. Editor of the national magazine is Stan Meseroll of Glenville. Calmer Graphics, here, handles editorial and production services for the publica- tion. This important information is proof in hand that Deer Sportsmen of America is providing its members with first class information on deer and deer hunting. DEER SPORTSMAN is a members only magazine. If you are not already a member, you can join by sending $10.00 to Deer Sportsmen of America, P.O. Box 24, Marlinton, W. Va. 24954.
