I know this address is long, but put it in your browser and download it so you can hear the mu- sic, then read it and think about all the mothers you know, including your own. Send it to those still living. I wish all women of the world (mothers or not) a wonderful Mother's Day. Leland McCauley was remembered by many. Jane Ann Riddle Richter writes, "I was sorry to hear of Leland McCauley's death. I was just visiting my cousin, Mary Betty Kidd Peak, who was aclassmate of Leland's. We were discussing the coming Alumni Banquet and those of old, and Mary Betty wondered ifLeland would make it to Burnsville this year. The last time Mary Betty came was a reunion year for the class of 1938; Leland had intended to come, but could not at the last minute (some illness, as I recall), and I think Mary Betty was the only other 1938 graduate to be present that year." She wonders if others of that fam- ily are living. My cousin, Carole Jean Robinson Shinn (who grew up in Freemansburg, WV, and now lives in California), expressed sorrow to hear of his death. She remembers that "Mac" (as they called him) worked with her father, Elmer T. "Pete" Robinson, in the pressure office of Equitable Gas Company, in Pitts- burgh. She remembers that he and his wife were into vitamins and may have had a little health store in South Hills of Pittsburgh. I wonder if that may have contributed to his long life. Many of us will miss seeing him at the alumni activities this year. Pat Blake, who has written some of these Chats in the past, wrote to me to ask if I am familiar with www.wvfarm2u.org. I was not, but it is very interesting. It is called The Collaborative for the 21 st Century Appalachia, and it is an organization that wants to preserve "the small farm, the environment, and a more traditional way of life." They say they believe in "sustaining small farms, the rural community, and the planet, through earth-friendly agri- cultural practices and a buy-local emphasis." At that site, you can search any county for farms, restaurants, Farmers' Markets, roadside-stand lo- cations and find out about how you can have vegetables shipped to your door. Braxton County had only one res- taurant listed, and Upshur County had none. There are many good restau- rants right here in Buckhannon, so someone should visit that site and list them. I think you will enjoy visiting the website (thank you, Pat). I love the story Buncy Marple is telling in Green Hill News in the Braxton paper about her Grandma Bosely. I missed the first part of the story. I hope Buncy puts these memo- ries in The Journal of The Braxton Historical Society. How about it, Buncy? Sharon Hensley, of Clendenin, wrote to thank me for help in finding some of her relatives. I got a phone call from Arbutus Collins Sims and let Sharon know about it. They are planning to meet. They are first cous- ins. Sharon writes, "I feel like some of the pieces are coming together." Arbutus' mother was Ethel, whose brother, Lester, is Sharon's father. Muriel, another sister, is mother of Paul Crutchfield of Burnsville (if I got that right). Muriel, Grace, Erma. Ethel, and Lester Collins are pictured in the spring issue of Golden Seal magazine (I also got a call from Jeanetta Mick about this family; I will return that call). I got an email from Russell Barker, who read about Sharon Hensley in the Glenville Democrat. He has done some research while trying to identify Jenny Collins, who married his great- uncle, William Moses Barker, about 1890. In the Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants, he found a listing for Elizabeth Collins, her son Jerome, and his son John. John is father to the above-mentioned siblings. He writes that "one daughter of Lester Collins still lives on Joe's Run (up from Sand Fork)." He says she was in high school with him at Sand Fork. 1954 to 1958 (I suspect that is Arbutus. but forgot to ask). He says Sand Fork High School still has all-year reunions (just like Burnsville does). Their re- union is held on the last Saturday of June. I got another interesting call from Charles Radabaugh in Warsaw. OH. This call was about Tommy Zinn. He knows the Zinns. who live in Doddridge County. Tommy's grand- father, John Wendell "JW" Zin n. was called "JW Warstories," because of the many stories he told. His son. Tom, lived on Jackson's Mill Road after they left Burnsville. His uncle Bartlett was brother to Tom and was buried in Kent, OH, in Standing Rock Cemetery. Charles has a muzzle-loader rifle. 1850 model, given to him by the fam- ily of George Radabaugh. He also remembers my pictures and column about Isaac "Ike" Brown and knows Annabelle Brown Linger. who lives at Georgetown. He also is acquainted with Ron Wine (son of Howard, fi-om B urnsville), who lives in Warsaw and is also good with automobiles (like his brother Willy of Burnsville?). Charles wanted a copy of the story about Tommy Zinn. so I told him about The Journal of the Braxton Hi s- torical Society and gave him Helen Traugh's phone number and address. Avocados can cause difficulty in breathing. Grapes and raisins affect kidneys. Caffeine can trigger neurological defects in dogs and cats. Tuna or fatty fish can cause severe pain in cats, and too much head lettuce or cabbage gives rabbits fatal The cob of corn can cause death by blocking the digestive tract And any cooked bones may splinter and puncture the bowel. Alas, there are times when all yore preventions fail to preserve that precious companion and the ing grief can be devastating. Farm Bureau Plays Host to Members and Families On Saturday, evening Gilmer County Farm Bureau played host to many of the County Farm Bureau members and their families. After in- troductions by the President, Mr. Gary Bush. Brenda McCartney introduced Mr. Andrew Stump, the GCFB- McCartney Scholarship recipient for 2009. Mr. Stump plans to attend Glen- ville State College beginning in the fall. He had to leave after his intro- duction to attend the Senior Prom activitms at Gilmer Co. Also attending the dinner were: Mr. Steve Butler, Executive Director of the West Virginia Farm Bureau and Mrs. Flora Turner. Region V Women's Chairperson. After dinner. Denzil Huff made some introductory remarks about Melville and Twila Moyers. Melville retired from a local gas company and Twila retired from the local school system after 35 years. Both Melville and Twila have been active in Farm Bureau. They have been especially helpful with the Gilmer County Farm Show. other fund raising events and on leadership committees. Since Melville had just been released from the hospital on Thursday, Twila made some introductory' comments. She then presented their three children to elaborate about the GOOD-WILL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE to the family and county. David discussed the closeness of the family and the encouragement his father and mother devoted to them and their 4-H club, the help with speeches and projects for 4-H and FFA. How his father always stressed the importance of trying to do better. Lou Ann presented a picture of how she emulated her other in the teaching profession. David talked of the child- hood rearing and the importance of the family and ties to the Rosedale Baptist Church. Both Melville and Twila have beenlong-time leaders in the church andcontinually volunteer to make their community and county a better place to live and raise a family. The presentations by the family members made this one of the more memorable Good-Will Dinners in a long time. After door-prizes and clos- ing remarks, many members and friends lingered to just reminisce about old and forgotten times. CHLOE BLISS JAMES Celebrates 2nd Birthday Chloe Bliss James turned two years old on April 26. She celebrated her birthday at home with her family. Chloe is the daughter of Nathan and Ronda James of Normantown. the granddaughter of Alan and Connie Hardman. Ron and Mary Lynch and the great granddaughter of Hill and Emma Jean James. Thank you to everyone who made her day special. Wine and Food Weekend at Canaan Valley Resort State Park May:8-10, .......... . ........... Canaan Valley Resort State Park will host wine and food lovers on May 8-10 lbr an entertaining, educational and gourmet culinary experience for their Wild & Wonderful Wine Week- end. The weekend will begin Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m. with a reception where wines from the world's most famous vineyards will be sampled with foods representing a variety of cuisines. The menu will include items such as Braciolle, crab cakes, smoked salmon. Mediterranean station, inter- national cheese display, and other culinarY treats. On Saturday, May 9. at 11 a.m., wine expert John Brown will conduct a seminar where guests will taste and evaluate a number of wines from around the world. The tasting will be followed by a three-course luncheon with specially selected wines. Lunch will be followed by a nutrition and culinary demonstration by Executive ChefOdeh and special guest speaker. Saturday evening's activities begin at 7 p.m. with the multi-course Grand Gourmet Dinner featuring Lobster Martini, Braised Veal Shank with Morel Mushroom Risotto, Steamed Pacific Cod with Napa Roasted To- matoes and Sweet Pea Puree. Baked Alaska with Huckleberry Puree and other culinary delights. On Sunday, guests will have the choice of a VIP breakfast or Mother's Day brunch in the resort's main dining room. Ricky has been a great help this month. He has sewn quite a few tent bodies for wall tents and wedge tents. Several of these had custom options which he handled well and quickly. He has also worked on hunter's tents, regents and finished a few tipis.
