Virginia I,aughlin. Parkersburg. Alpha Phi president will preside. Enid Portnoy, Assistant Professor of Speech Communication at West Virginia University will begin the Society's Bicentennial Observance. She will present a program "A Loving Portrait of West Virginia," using selections from local poets and prose writers. As em:h of you know, I am a candidate for mayor in the City Election on June 3rd. I hope you Will consider the qualifications of the candidates and express your sentiments by voting accordingly. The next 2 years are going to be t~ng times for whomever is elected as mayor The city has too many problm for you to elect a candidate who has to learn effective management and ~n proper business experience while holding offic~ Glenville is at the threshold of a tremendous financial difficulty due to a lack of funds and if soma restraint is not treed, it could be very costly for all of us. I am sure you me aware that it is going to take an extra good manage~, due tO tide problem, the proper time that is required to carry out the duties of ;: It is also very important for the mayor to have good b~inese expertise familiar with the residents, and the City's problems, and also to slays consider the residents' wishes in making any future plans. A native of Gilmer County since 1937, I know practically every resident in this city and I care what happens to them and the City of Glenville as I will be s lifelong resident. I am old enough to be mature, (Age 37) but young enough to be indumtrioum and energetic. I am a very responsible pe~on and will take care of ymK problems quickly. Your support and votewill be very much appr~ated. Paid Political 0 Family Planning services offered locally One of the various services provided by the Department of Welfare is family planning. This service is available to any woman of child-bearing age except those women who by having surgery are no longer capable of becoming pregnant Referrals are made to the Family Planning Clinic or to the physician of their choice Through Family Planning services a woman receives a complete physical examination, regular PAP tests, and is provided some type of contraceptive method which enables her to plan her family or to limit the number of children she wants. The Family Planning Clinic also provides counseling to couples who desire to have children. Physical examinations for these couples can be arranged but the clinic does not pay for the examination. Also, counseling is provided for men who may want to have a vasectomy. Family Planning services are also available for young, unmarried persons under 18 years of age but referrals or services cannot be provided unless parental consent is given. The Family Planning Clinic is staffed with qualified personnel and follow-up procedures are given to all who attend the clinic. Information on family planning and birth control are given at the clinic through counseling, filmstrip, and lecture, Anyone interested in family planning services may contact the Department of Welfare office. "Colonels" Sherman Moore and Robert Butcher take bids on I~x lunch while le~ and ~el geese as winners in the old-fashioned cake walk at Senior Cltizons Center during fund-r~dsl~ Senior Citizens raise camp money with old-fashioned Gilmer County Senior Citizens last week sponsored an old-fashioned box social and cake walk at City Hall. raising nearly $200 in one evening to help pay summer camp expenses for Spencer State Hospital patients. Area senior citizens will join senior citizens from five other counties for five days later this summer at Gandeeville 4-H camp. Patients from the state hospital, including those residents-in Adult Care Homes, will also participate in camp activities, All six senior citizen centers are raising money to support hospitalized persons at the camp. Approximately 55 persons gathered just before' sunset last Wednesday night at City Hall. As usual, the men gathered outside to chat while the Ladies seated themselves in a circle inside, discussing gardens, the weather and other subjects, waiting for the evening's activities to begin. A guess cake contest kicked off the fund raising evening. Gladys Reed and Virginia Harvey carred a double layered cake around for all to guess what was placed inside.
