One of America's favorite backyard birds, cardinals are distinctive in appearance and song - known for their"cheer cheer cheer," "w hit-chew whit-chew" and "putty purty purty" whistles, The cardinal is the state bird of 7 states: l llinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina,Ohio, Virginia, and of course West Virginia! inia Black Bear: The state Division of Natural Resources conducted a poll to elect a state animal as a symbol for West Virginia in 1954. The students, teachers, and sportsmen of West Virginia chose the black bear as the animal symbol for West Vi,ginia by a large margin. The bear population has been increasing since then, living in all of West Virginia's 55 counties. The black bear is also the state mammal of Louisiana and the state animal of New Mexico. inla Monarch Butterfly: West Virginia designated the monarch buttertly (Danaus plexippus) the official slate butterfly in 1995. Both caterpillar and butlerfly are brilliant in color as a warning - the Monarch ingests toxins from the milkweed plant which are poisonous to predators. rginia Charleston: Located in the Appalachian mountains where the Elk and Kanawha rivers converge in Kanawha county, Charleston is the state capital and largest city in West Virginia. rg,nla WOODBURN HALL AT WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY IN MORGANTOWN (OLD GOLD AND BLUE ARE THE OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY COLORS) Old Gold and Blue: West Virginia designated old gold and blue as the official state colors in 1963. Old gold and bhle are also the official colors of West Virginia University in Morgantown WV. inia Brook Trout: West Virginia designated brook troul as the official slate fish in 1973. Brook trout live under water conditions that are cool, clean and pure. Flag of West Virginia: The West Virginia flag features the state motto (Mountaineers Are Always Free), a wreath of Rhododendron (the state flower), and the state coat-of-arms, The official description tot the state flag of West Virginia: "The proportions of the flag of the Slate of West Virginia shall be the same as those of the United States ensign; the field shall be pure white, upon the center of which shall be emblazoned in proper colors, the coat-of arms of the State of West Virginia upon which appears the date of the admission of the State into the Union, also with the motto,' Monlani Semper Liberi' (Mountaineers Are Always Free). Above the coat-of-arms of the State of West Virginia there shall be a ribbon lettered, 'State of West Virginia,' and arranged appropriately around the lower part of the coal-of-arms of the State of West Virginia a wreath of Rhododendron maximum in proper colors.
