The Business on Board with Childcare! designation will signify a West Vir- ginia employer's adherence to key national and local criteria for a childcare-fiiendly workplace. KIDS COUNT officially launched the pro- gram during a training session for the regional partners who will help spread the word about Business on Board with Childcare ! at the grassroots level. "The availability of high-quality childcare has a big impact on the business bottom line," said Clark Hansbarger, president of the KIDS COUNT Board and Dean of the Charleston Campus of the West Vir- ginia University School of Medicine. "When companies support their em- ployees' childcare needs, the result is more successful recruitment and re- tention, improved productivity, re- duced absenteeism and tardiness, and savings for the bottom line. That's why KIDS COUNT is making a big commitment to recognizing and en- couraging employers who provide a supportive environment for families with young children." The Business on Board with Childcare! award criteria have been adapted from a list developed by the Families and Work Institute ( and KIDS COUNT's own statewide et2 forts to get parents, childcare provid- ers and community leaders involved in advocating for better childcare poli- cies. Each criterion has been assigned a weighted point value based on its overall value in creating a childcare- friendly workplace. To be desig- nated a Business on Board with Childcare], West Virginia employers must comply with any combination of the following award criteria, total- ing at least 15 points: • On-site childcare (25 points); • Payment for childcare with vouch- ers or other subsidies that have direct costs to the company (20 points); • Flexible spending accounts that help employees pay for childcare with pre-tax dollars (10 points); • Reimbursement ofchildcare costs when empk)yees work late (10 points); • Reimbursement ofchildcare costs when employees travel for business (10 points); • Childcare fbrschool-age children on vacation (10 points); • Backup or emergency care for employees when their regular childcare arrangements fall apart (10 points); • Sick care for the children of employees; or sick leave for employ- ees with sick children; or employees allowed to bring sick children to work (10 points); • Participation in their local KIDS COUNT Community or other similar eflbrts to advocate for betterchildcare. (5 points); • Access to information to help locate childcare in the community (Child Care Resource and Referral information) (5 points); • Financial support of the West Virginia KIDS COUNTFund, includ- ing sponsorship of the Business on Board with Childcare! awards (5 points). For more information about the Business on Board with Childcare! awards and how your organization can apply, go to; call I- 888-KIDS COUNT or e-mail margiehale @ wvkidscountfund, org. KIDS COUNT will accept applica- tions for the 2009 Business on Board with Childcare ! awards until the close of business on Friday, October 30, 2009. Every West Virginia business that achieves KIDS COUNT' s 2009 Busi- ness on Board with Childcare! desig- nation will receive: a special insignia and a distinctive plaque for public display; recognition on KIDS COUNT's website and in KIDS COUNT publications; e-mail alerts and press releases; and public recog- nition at regional and statewide awards events. In addition, employers who go beyond the minimum criteria will earn special recognition at the 2009 statewide awards event, to be held in Charleston in early 2010. According to KIDS COUNT Ex- ecutive Director, Margie Hale, "Our goal was to create a recoenition pro- gram that is accessible and achiev- able for all West Virginia businesses, large or small, and one that provides the support and information all em- ployers need to offer a childcare- friendly workplace. We want to make it possible for every employer in West Virginia to become recog- nized as a Business on Board with Childcare!" The program is being funded in part by grants from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and the Early Care and Education Division of the West Virginia Depart- ment of Health and Human Resources. To ensure the long-term viability of Business on Board with Childcare!, KIDS COUNT has launched a fund- raising campaign to secure an addi- tional $70,000 from major business sponsors.
