But several steam engines could not be linked together for added power and operated from one cab, the way diesels can, explains the National Geographic Society's new book, "Railroads: The Great American Adventure." North Sea oil reserves may prove to be 23 billion barrels, ninth largest in the world, National Geographic says. A trip thougll Europe Brussels, Paris, London, Monte Carlo--these romantic, inviting vacation meccas of Europe were only postmarks for the late Myrtle Daruell for most of the years she served as postmistress of (;timer Station in eastern Gflmer County. Then, in 1962 Mrs. Darnell and her husband Roscoe, Joined a group of We next drove through the Rhine Valley on Hitlers' old military road. The land, with its beautiful gardens, is owned by the government; however, each farmer receives a plot to farm. Grape vineyards line the banks of the rivers and the rougher soil and level plots are reerved for vegetables and farming. Most of the farming in the valley is done by hand, and a farmer usually uses good draft horses instead of tractors. Surprisingly, we never saw as much as one plug horse on our entire trip. We did see a farmer leading a milk cow that was drawing a two-wheeled cart of produce. She was a sleek and fat whiteface and was moving very slowly. The following day brought us to Heidelberg. Germany, the center of German culture and learning. We toured Heidelburg Castel, built in 1924 but not finished until 200 years later. Soon. like the soldier who went off to war we left our hearts in 88 postmasters from across the The Glenville Democrat/ Pathfinder 7 Saturday night by Randy Miller of Letter Gap. Mrs. Darnell's detailed memoirs of her |ourney provide a unique look at that country and its people and attractions through the eye of a longtime Gilmer County resident. The first in a four-part series of Mrs. Darnell's story begins in Glenviile Democrat/ Pathfinder. today's Sept. 1, 1962 g A group of 88 postmasters and friends, including R.A. Darnel], my husband, left New York;s Idlewild ' (now Kennedy} Airport at 10 bound for Brussels, Belgium. Flying at an altitude of 35,000 ft., we made the crossing in six and a half hours. Upon landing we had a time difference of six hours. We continued our journey in three motor coaches equipped with a driver and courier. Our driver, whom we called John the Scot. doubled as our linguist since he knew the language of all the countries we visited. The tour included transportation, hotels and three meals a day as well as admission to most public buildings and some special excursion trips. One of our biggest problems was exchanging money as we traveled from country to country. Each of the 11 nations we visited used different currency, so we tried with might and main to go broke before we left each country. Belgium has been called the "crossroad and battle ground of Europe." because every major war in Western Europe has touched the nation. Few visible signs of the ravages of the wars remain as the Belgian people are industriouS. Readers may recall during World War II when King Leopold surrend- ered to Hitler early in the war to save the country, its men and the lovely churches and cathedrals. We drove by the Grand Palace, down the tree-lined avenues, past the famous statue of the Mannekin. Leaving Brussels next morning, we traveled through the Ardennes Forest and the Bastone battlefield where they have on display the first American tank that assisted in liberating the town. It was driven by Gen. McAuliff, who was then just a young soldier. McAuliff is well remembered for his retort, "Ah Nuts," when asked to surrender. The townspeople have even erected a little souvenior stand called the Ah Nuts Shop in memory of McAuliff. A wonderful star-shaped statue, built on a hill overlooking Bastone, contains the names and states of every solider killed in the Battle of the Bulse. The center of the memorial is an unknown soldiers grave, ad rned all year with fresh flowers. SeventY-seven thousand soldiers lost their lives in the battle. Flowers in Europe have a special place in the hearts of the citizens. Every garden and home flower bed, no matter how humble, is lush with flowers. We also passed Fhnders Field, where poppies grow made famous by "Poem" and commemorated on Poppy Day.
