The company is intensifying its efforts to educate the pubhc to recognize and report escaping gas, said Bernard Prather. superintendent. "'The public often can be helpful in reporting escaping gas which may be hazardous." Prather said. Residents along the right-of-way are urged to report evidence of escaping gas to the pipeline company at 304-965-3317 in Clendenin. Obvious gas emergencies also should be reported to the local police and fire departments. When escaping gas is detected near their home. residents are urged to shut down any equipment in use, avoid open flame or other ignition sources, evacuate the area, caution others in the vicinity, and prevent automobiles or other vehicles from driving into the escaping gas. "The same safety precautions taken when new pipelines are built are continued throughout the Life of the pipeline." he said. The pipelines are used to transport natural gas from producing wells to Columbia's seven distribution companies and 79 other local utilities serving more than four million customers. "'Natural gas transmission lines are the safest means of product transportation," Prather said. "In a recent four-year period, for example, an average of only three fatalities a year was reported for natural gas transmission lines." Columbia operates 18,189 miles of gas production and transnuasion lines in seven states, including West Virginia. oEBcer [rilht].
