For the back he used a maple board, believed to be over 100 years old. The top he fashioned of pine, the sides from green willow and the neck from red beech. The finger board and tailpiece he made from locust. Like Sampson, Mrs. Parsons has had no formal lessons and can't read music. "I've lived in Calhoun County all of my life," she said. "My father played the fiddle and he taught me how to use the fiddle sticks. I wanted to play the banjo but my brother who played wouldn't teach me. I learned from watching and trying." Mrs. Parsons has earned some degree of fame for her mountain clawhammer style of banjo playing. She has appeared at many places throughout the country including the prestigious Newport, Rhode Island Folk Festival and the New York World's Fair. On the wall of her home near Orma are the ribbons she has taken at the Glenville Folk Festival and the Wood Festival in Grantsville. Because of her health, Mrs. Parsons plans to stop travelling so far to play. "I've been invited to North Carolina to take part in something down there and I'd like to go to that one." she said. "After that I'll proba, lose to home."
