Mumps vaccine is now available for the first time at the Gilmer County Health Department, according to Dr. Thomas Gross, Health Officer. Dr. Gross announced today that the department has received a supply fo measles-mumps-rubella vaccine and mumps vaccine for the protection of unimmunized children. Dr. Gross reported that the vaccine has been provided to the counties to bring mumps under control across the State. West Virginians mumps rate was seven times that of the remainder of the nation in 1974. This high incidence of mumps, coupled with the seriousness of the disease, is cause for concern. according to Dr. Gross. He said that complications following mumps may lead to permanent damage. Inflamma- tion of the brain, which may lead to mental retardation, is one of its most serious aftereffects. Other possible complications in- elude loss of hearing and dam~ae to the pancreas, an important digestive gland. If contracted during adulthood, mumps may cause sterility, both in men and women. Although most cases of mumps occur amon~ children, adults can and do get the disease. "We are most pleased to be able to offer protection against mumps and its complications to Gilmer County children," Dr, Gross said. He added that since most children have mumps by the time they reach their teens, most of the vaccine will be administered to children under age twelve may be between the years. need of the department at them to one immunization Clinic fourth a.m• - 11:30 The list before August 26. idea "'The idea manure IS ' ARD? to the Wall J The Na made plans to to be produ( ec manure.
