6 The Glenvflle Democrat/PatMinder August 26, 1976 ++ ..... THE NEW BAND DIRECTOR - Gilmer County High School's new hand director recently took over his group of musicians. Jerry Walus replaces former band director Mike Barnhouso, who has moved to Spencer. [Democrat New band director starts with enthusiasm One of a band's primary functions is to generate enthusiasm. Gilmer County High School has hired a new band director who should instill plenty of that spirit. "I'm planning to build a real good band here. We want to have the best band in the state," said new director, Jerry Walus. Walus took over as band director on Aug. 2, following the departure of former director Mike Barnhouse who has moved to Spencer. The band has already played in Cherry River Festival in Richwood under their now director. They are now honing their skills at the week-long band camp at the Gilmer County Recreation Center. The band is schlulad to play in the Marshall University Band Festival the Black Walnut Festival in Spencer, the Area Band Festival in Clarksburg, the Grand Feature Parade of tim Sternwheel Regatta in Charleston, the Glenville State College Homecoming parade and pre-game and haLftime performances at all the GCHS home football games. We]us also has plans of adding swing and percussion sections to his band. His previous position was band director for Bradshaw Junior High in McDowell County. He is a graduate of West Virginia Tech.
