6 The Gle-ville Democrat/PAthfinder John G. Hutchinson, the youngest ~yor ever elected in Charleston, Glenville for the second in a row recently. He and his Berry. participated in the State College Homecoming The week previous, the mayor ]ttended the annual J-J Dinner at the Center. Hutchinson, 40. and a Democrat, in running for governor in I Y, Y, October 23, 1975 1976, although he says he will not declare himself an official candidate until, possibly, December. Two men have already declared themselves as Democratic candidates for governor. James Sprouse and John D. Rockefeller IV. Sprouse resigned from the state Supreme Court in September to make the race, Rockefeller, better known as "Jay," is former Secretary of State, former STORE HOURS y, Friday -- 9 to 5 p.m. president of W. Va. Wesleyan College. and the 1972 Democratic candidate who lost to the incumbent Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr. Hutchinson thinks he stacks up well against either announced candidate and said, in a brief interview in the Democrat office after the parade, he offers the voters a true choice. "There are two things the people are clamoring for-a man of integrity and a record of accomplishment," he said. "Rockefeller and Sprouse have not only ducked the issues, but, so far. they're not challenging each other. In addition, Sprouse represents the mile of street in the city, built over 20 miles of sanitary sewers and have a $10 million storm sewer system nearing completion." -"We have the only free municipal ambulance service in the state, with a five-minute response time to any medical emergency; the only municipal consumer protection agency in the state: and we've brought every resident of the city within a Class 1 fire protection area." The popular mayor feels that neither Sprouse nor Rockefeller have "anything to show as far as doing something for West Virginia." If he were elected governor. Hzltchinson said he would emphasize three areas: refurbishing secondary roads in the state, promotion of the state's coal rural "'I would just make certain that rural areas were familiar with all federal and state grant/loan possibili- ties. We could, in addition, provide as much expertise in the planning realm as possible...if we were asked to help on the Qtate level." "Lets face It, local communities have to stimulate local commercial activities to bring themselves to a more competitive level with larger urban areas. Local communities must take it upon themselves to decide what areas of commerce they are going to stimulate to make themselves as aJtrpctive a community as possible. "Of course, if outside capital chooses to invest in rural communities, like branch industries, they are going to have to pay their share of taxes.
