Bears, contrary to popular belief, don't. There even has been talk that humans might do it. Hiberbate, that is. True hibernation is not merely a deep sleep, but a state of suspended animation that is, ill effect, a vacation from life. Every measurable pr6cess is profoundly slowed. Body temperature drops dramatically, the heart beats slowly, and breathing is reduced and irregular. In hibernation, a ground squirrel's heart throbs weakly three times a minute, compared to a normal 360 beats a minute; a marmot takes only one shallow breath every five minutes: a bat's temperature may approach freezing. They're authentic re-creations of styles that range from Louis XV, to Early American, to Contempo- rary, with matching accessories. Compared to the high cost of building a wood burning fireplace (usually more than $1500,00), this is a real value. Each firelace has the special touch of cast, hand-antiqued brck or cut stone, real wood mantels, and raised hearths. For extra warmth, and the effect of burning logs, add Readybuilt Gas or Electric logs. Come in today, and choose a fireplace for your home. Curled intoa fury hall and cold to the touch, the hibernating animals seem lifeless. A European dormouse was placed in a small wool-lined box and shipped 140 miles thrmgh the marl without waking. One dormouse slept continuously for six months and 23 days. The flame of life burns so low that a dormt hedgehog survived a 33-minute immersion in water. Research with bats indicated that hibernating bats apparently live 30 times longer than mammals of the same weight that remain active throughout the year, the National Geographic Society reports. This has led scientists to speculate on the benefits of hibernation for humans, Dormant humans could live through the centuries needed to make space voyages to fantastically distant constellations. Their food and oxygen requirments would be about a hundredth of an active person's. Scientists see only a dim possibility of inducing true hibernation in man, but its potential is promising enough to encourage study of the process. American Indians once thought bears smarter than man "because a man does not know how to live all winter without eating anything." Bern Just Sleep Bears usually sleep deeply in the winter, but they don't truly hibernate. P a #Wlmieetlo tay nortnaL and in dead Of winter bears have been shuffling grumpily through the forest. Hibernators do not nvccessarfly remain in a continues torpor. Some store food in their burrows and wake periodically to eat. Others live on excess fat and remain inactive for longer periods. One researcher banding hiber- nati .rig bats in a cave noted that they were so stiff and unresponsive that it took a close look to tell they weren't dee& But if they were handled or even disturbed by lights and talking, they awakened and soon were as lively as ever. Cold alone does not trigger hiberbation, nor does increasing warmth in'!epg arouse animals, Zoologists believe hibernation is closely linked to the endocrine glands and nervous system, but the exact cause is unknown. Hibernation enables animals to survive long periods of cold weather and food scarcity while safe from predators. One naturalist asked: 'What greater boon could such creatures have than this sleep of insensibility, free from all cravings of hunger and all danger of perishing with cold, till the warm sun of spring once more calls them into life and activity?"
