Answering today is Carroll Curry, Director, Customer Services for Monongahela. QUESTION: Will the cost of electricity keep Qn going up? ANSWER: If the national inflation rate could be brought down to an annual level of not more than 2% or 3%, it is likely that electric rates could at least level off. But there is now no indication that this will happen soon. A high rate of inflation continues. Coal labor contracts have provisions that can result in further increases in coal costs. Construction costs for power stations continue to increase. Costs keep going up for vehicles, wire and cable, poles, hardware, gasoline, and all the other equipment and supplies we must buy to provide electric service. And interest rates are very high for the money we must borrow to pay for all these things. Whole new categories of expenses are being created by environmental control regulations. One example -- about $2OO,OOO,QOO will have to be spent for environmental control equipment at the Pleasants Power Station now under construction. That's more than the total cost of the Fort Martin Station, com- pleted only seven years ago. As long as all these there is just no way creasing electric rates. costs keep going up, possible to avoid in- As this is written, we are looking at a newspaper of January 5, 1966 with a front page story about a substantial dlecrea=e in Monongahela Power Company electric rates.
